Highway Slides into Ocean after Storm
California Coastline
Heavy rain in southern California has caused a huge portion of a road to collapse into the sea, leaving a gaping hole in the side of a cliff.
Rains pounded the Los Angeles area as a weekend storm passed from the Pacific Ocean into Southern California, 900ft section of highway south of Los Angeles crumbled and fell into the Pacific Ocean on Sunday (11/20/2011).
The section of Paseo Del Mar in the San Pedro area has been edging seawards for months but this is the first time a sizeable chunk has broken away completely.
The scenic route was closed several months ago when splits began to appear in the road.
There are no reports of injuries or property damage in the immediate area.
