近代，水上木偶的場地都是在至少四平方公尺大小的水池上演出。當地最常見的集結場合除了是鄉下搭建在池塘中的野戲台，再來就是戲團訂製攜帶式的巨型水槽四處巡迴公演，或者是外國觀光客見到的，在一棟專業表演大樓裡把舞台裝修改造成為傳統村莊池塘的樣貌。

由於地球村的催化作用，原先局限於北越的舞台戲碼終於在一九九零年代初期與世界接上了軌道，越南境內以國家木偶劇院、河內的昇龍木偶公司與胡志明市木偶公司等三大體系成為此行的翹楚，並且知名度迅速地活躍在國際之間，征服著一批批來自各國的觀光客的心。一南一北固定演出的主要觀賞據點，分別是河內市的昇龍水上木偶劇院和胡志明市的金龍水上木偶劇院。
