Prasat Preah Vihear Area to be Demilitarized

Temple troops to be withdrawn

In modern times, Prasat (Temple) Preah Vihear, a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated at the top of a 2,000-foot high escarpment overlooking the Cambodian plains far below, was rediscovered by the outside world and became subject of an emotional dispute between Thailand and the newly independent Cambodia.

Now, Thai and Cambodian military authorities have agreed to withdraw their troops from a provisional demilitarized zone near the Preah Vihear temple and let Indonesian observers supervise the area.

Cambodia proposed that both countries immediately follow the provisional demilitarized zone order of the ICJ, welcome Indonesian observers and withdraw soldiers from the zone, of which 8.5 sq km is in Thailand and 8.8 sq km is in Cambodia, under the supervision of the observers.


The Thai side agreed with the proposal.
